Never heard of ‘em? Electric bikes have been around longer than you may think, the 19th century to be exact. In the United States, one of the first battery-powered bicycle patents was granted to Ogden Bolton Jr. in 1895 for an eBike that shared a similar design to many eBikes on the road today.
Evolving from the less conventional 19th century design, eBikes have turned the tide of 21st century transportation across the globe. Combined with the obstacles of travel cost and pandemic aftermath, eBikes exploded as a realistic way to get to work, transport groceries or simply have a blast with a bunch of friends.
For the most part, there’s really not a whole lot of mechanical engineering that goes into an eBike; it’s just a pedal-assisted bike with a battery. In most cases, a throttle is included to alleviate the effort of pedaling. Lectric eBikes combined both features with total perfection.
For commuters without a car, eBikes are also a great way to climb hills and hit long distances without breaking a huge sweat. These benefits are especially helpful for riders with joint pain, asthma or other health related issues.
Electric bikes remove many of the barriers that riders face when using traditional analog bicycles, which is exactly what made eBikes so popular in 2020.
Along with many other bicycles, eBikes saw an enormous boom during the pandemic, because people needed a quick way to get outside while remaining socially distant. And with less traffic from vehicles, due to pandemic lockdowns, cyclers had more range to explore the roads without feeling anxious.
In particular, sales of eBikes grew 145 percent in 2020 compared to 2019, outpacing sales of all bikes, which were up 65 percent, according to a report from a market research firm quoted by the New York Times.
But even before the pandemic, eBike sales were still blowing everyone out of the water.
According to a 2018 report from market research firm NPD, the fastest-growing bicycle on the market was still electric, while eBike sales totaled $77.1 million in 2017, up 91 percent compared to 2016. In 2018, sales of electric bikes grew more than eight times since 2014.
In Europe alone, riders are expected to buy an extra 10 million bikes per year by 2030, according to organizations quoted by Forbes. That’s 47% more than the annual number in 2019. If accurately predicted, the 30 million bike sales per year would more than double the number of passenger cars currently registered in the EU per year.
So with that said, there’s really no better time than now to hop on the electric bike wave, which why you should start strong and ride with an industry leader like Lectric eBikes.
