Take a Scenic Ride on the Animas River Trail

The Animas River Trail is the best bike trail in Durango! This 7-mile long, ​​hard surface shared-use path winds along the gorgeous Animas River and can be easily accessed from the downtown Durango area.

Along this trail you’ll experience gorgeous mountain views, bridges, lovely parks, and various waypoints to enjoy. Some of the best stops along the Animas River Trail include:

  • The Smelter Rapids Whitewater Park: Stop here and you might get the opportunity to watch kayakers or river surfers practice on this official Olympic training course. 
  • The Durango Botanic Gardens: These free public gardens surround the Durango Public Library 
  • The Durango Fish Hatchery: Bring quarters for fish food and enjoy seeing the oldest state-owned fish hatchery in Colorado!

The Animas River trail is the best paved bike trail in Durango, but some other trails recommended for eBikes include the Florida Road Trail, SMART 160 Trail, Three Springs Trail and Goeglein Gulch Road Trail. 

Get an Adrenaline Pump at the Cundiff Park BMX Track 

Along the Animas River Trail at Cundiff Park, there’s a free BMX track. Now, don’t get too crazy on your eBike, but a slow roll through the dips and hills of the BMX track is sure to satisfy your itch for a little extra adventure on your eBike. 

Eat Your Heart Out Around Town 

For a morning pick-me-up before riding around town, head to Durango Coffee Company, a local favorite known for its artisanal brews and cozy ambiance. Whether you prefer a classic espresso or a creamy latte, this charming cafe has you covered.

After a morning of cycling, refuel with a hearty brunch at El Moro Tavern, acclaimed for serving up some of the best brunch dishes in town (some would say, the world!). Indulge in mouthwatering classics like eggs benedict or satisfy your sweet tooth with a stack of fluffy pancakes drizzled with maple syrup.

For a taste of Durango's rich history, make sure to visit the Diamond Belle Saloon, located inside the historic Strater Hotel. Step back in time as you sip on handcrafted cocktails in an Old West setting adorned with elegant Victorian decor. Don't miss their live music performances, which happen every single evening! 

And don’t worry, you’ll find plenty of places around town to lock up your eBike and stroll the sidewalks of downtown Durango.  

Experience the Hidden Gem of Vallecito Lake

If you’re up for a challenge, hit the road on your eBike and venture 18 miles to Vallecito Lake. This beautiful, secluded mountain valley offers a variety of outdoor recreation activities including hiking, camping, fishing and more. 

To get there from Durango, take Florida Road (CR 240) out of town and take a left on CR 501 which will bring you to Vallecito Lake. This 36 mile round trip also includes a couple thousand feet of elevation gain, making the Lectric XP 3.0 Long Range eBike, the perfect eBike for the job. Go ahead and utilize the throttle when you need it without worrying about running out of juice!  

Where are eBikes Allowed in Durango? 

Durango is a very eBike friendly town! In general, eBikes are allowed on hard surface trails, street bike lanes, in the road and on sidewalks outside of downtown. You can check the local government website for more details on the regulations for different classes of eBikes.
