Key West is a true bucket list destination—with crystal-clear water, warm weather year-round, and a never-ending list of activities. One of the best parts? The entire island is accessible by eBike.

Old Town

No trip to Key West is complete without exploring Old Town. This historic district is the island’s heart, home to Duval Street, the Hemingway House, local museums, quirky shops, and countless restaurants.

It gets busy—especially on weekends or when cruise ships are in port. We spent nearly two months on the island, and eBiking quickly became our go-to mode of transportation. Parking in Old Town is limited and expensive, but bikes are welcome everywhere. You’ll find ample bike racks, and parking is free.

Must-see stops include the Southernmost Point—a photo-op classic. Arrive before 8 a.m. to beat the long lines.

But don’t just stick to the tourist hotspots. Slow down and take in Key West’s character: historic homes with shipwreck lookout towers, local artists selling from their front yards, and hidden gems like the Giant Conch sculpture in the Key West High School parking lot.

Adventures

Many of Key West’s off-island adventures depart from Old Town— don’t leave without experiencing at least one.

Snorkel Trip

While it’s possible to snorkel right off the beach, heading out to the offshore reef is a must. Several tour companies offer excursions, but we especially loved Sebago’s snorkel trip. The reef sites were stunning, and the crew was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable.

Dry Tortugas National Park

Located 70 miles off the coast, Dry Tortugas National Park is a true bucket list destination. Accessible only by boat or seaplane, this remote park features a historic Civil War-era fort surrounded by crystal-clear waters and vibrant coral reefs. Spend your day touring the fort, snorkeling around its base, or relaxing on the white sand beach—it’s an unforgettable adventure.

Beaches

What’s more island-life than biking to the beach? At just four miles long and one mile wide, the island makes it easy to hit the sand by bike.

Higgs Beach

Often overlooked by tourists, Higgs is a quiet spot perfect for relaxing or snorkeling. The beach is split by the historic Fort West Martello and the Key West Garden Club, free to explore. On one side, you’ll find restrooms, beach rentals, and Salute! restaurant. On the other, stairs lead into the water for nice snorkeling, we spotted fish, a stingray, and even a nurse shark.

Fort Zachary Taylor State Park

This beach is unique for its shade—perfect for hammocks. There's also an artificial reef just offshore, making it a decent snorkel spot when the surf is calm. The park connects to Truman Waterfront Park, home to a Thursday farmers market (2–7 p.m.) with rotating vendors, food trucks, and tropical plants. Don’t miss the historic Coast Guard cutter docked nearby for tours.

Smathers Beach

The most popular and picturesque beach on the island, Smathers is lined with palms and often hosts food trucks and rental stands. It’s a classic tropical scene and a great stop on your ride.

Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail

This epic 90-mile bike trail stretches from Key Largo to Key West. While it’s not fully connected yet, major sections are rideable—and worth the detour.

A must-ride section? The Old Seven Mile Bridge in Marathon. This former highway bridge is now a pedestrian and bike path that leads to Pigeon Key, a historic island only accessible by foot, bike, or the Pigeon Key Express train. Though its name suggests otherwise, the open section of the bridge is just 2 miles each way—but the views of the turquoise water on both sides are breathtaking.

Where to Stay

Key West has no shortage of hotels, bed & breakfasts, and vacation rentals. RVers have fewer options, but two stand out:

Sigsbee Campground (Naval Air Station Key West)

A hidden gem for disabled veterans, active-duty personnel, and military retirees. Waterfront views, unbeatable sunsets, and the best RV rates in the Keys.

Boyd’s Key West Campground

Located on Stock Island, just 10 minutes from Old Town. A full-service RV resort with tropical vibes.

Where to Eat

Key West is packed with restaurants and bars—but skip the tourist traps and check out these local favorites:

Santiago’s Bodega

A cozy tapas spot tucked on a quiet street. Their happy hour offers delicious small plates and drink specials.

Square Grouper

Originally from Islamorada, this Key West location serves upscale cuisine with consistent quality and service. You may want to skip the eBike for this one—it’s worth dressing up for.

Hogfish Bar & Grill

A locals' favorite on Stock Island, known for its relaxed vibe, waterfront seating, and incredible hogfish tacos and sandwiches.

Hurricane Hole Restaurant

Also on Stock Island, this laid-back eatery offers reasonable prices and waterfront dining. Book a jet ski tour next door with Key West Water Tours and get a free beer post-adventure.

Why eBiking is the Best Way to Explore Key West

eBikes open up the island in a way that cars just can’t. You’ll feel the sun, smell the salt air, and access every corner of Key West with ease. The island is impressively bike-friendly, with designated lanes, shared-road rights, and even bike parking at the airport.

We spent over $150 in parking during our first week before we realized just how easy it is to bike everywhere. Don’t make the same mistake—skip the hassle and spend that money on something more memorable. Just hop on your eBike and ride.
