Every summer, thousands of cyclists gather in Southern California for the Tour de Big Bear—an annual charity ride that offers distances for everyone, from 25 to 100 miles. This year, Lectric riders Larry and his teammate joined the challenge on their Lectric XPress eBikes, tackling the 50-mile on-road ride alongside hundreds of other cyclists.

A Community on Wheels

With more than 3,500 riders total and 5,000 spectators cheering from the sidelines, the Tour de Big Bear is as much about community as it is about endurance. Cowbells rang, horns honked, and locals lined the streets to encourage riders as they climbed into Big Bear’s mountain roads.

The 50-Mile Ride

Larry and his riding partner joined the 50-mile distance group of about 500 riders, including 40 on eBikes. The ride featured 2,700 feet of climbing and reached elevations of 7,100 feet, making battery management and pacing crucial. Starting mid-pack, the duo pushed forward, overtaking 75–100 riders within the first 18 miles.

They rode strategically, keeping to pedal assist 2–3 early on to conserve energy for the later climbs. In the end, they crossed the finish line 9th and 10th among the eBike riders—many of whom were on bikes costing four times as much as the Lectric XPress. Their stats? An impressive 18.1 MPH average speed, with a peak average of 18.5 MPH before easing back on city streets near the finish.

Acceptance & Camaraderie

The event was officially open to eBikes, and the reception was nothing but positive. Larry noted not a single derogatory comment from traditional riders—in fact, some cyclists even drafted behind them at points during the ride.

Why Tour de Big Bear is a Must-Ride

This ride isn’t just about the miles—it’s about the experience. The event is well-organized and safe, with many intersections closed by law enforcement, multiple rest stops with tech and medical support, and an energetic expo area. Plus, the entry fees benefit 50 local charities, making every mile count for more than just personal achievement.

Tips for Future Riders

  • New to long-distance rides? Try the 25-mile event.
  • Riding a single battery eBike? Stick to shorter routes, unless you can bring a spare.
  • Dual-battery riders? You’ll be well-suited for the 50-mile course.

Already Thinking Ahead?

Entries are already open for the 2026 Tour de Big Bear, and Larry says it’s the perfect “starter event” for Lectric riders looking to try group rides. Safe, scenic, and supportive—it’s an adventure worth adding to your bucket list.
