What Is UL 2849 Certification for Electric Bikes?

UL 2849 is the safety standard that covers an eBike’s electrical system: the motor, battery, charger, and controller, tested holistically as one connected unit.

This certification is one of the surest signs of eBike quality and safety. When shopping for an electric bike — especially your first one — it’s a great standard to look for.

UL 2849 vs. UL 2271 Certification for eBikes: What’s the Difference?

UL 2271 is about the battery specifically, while UL 2849 is about the whole system. For a safe electric bike, it’s important to have both. 

eBikes are made up of many different components, and you can only have a quality bike if everything that goes into it is the best-of-the-best.

UL2271 Battery Certification

UL 2271 is a battery testing standard for rechargeable lithium battery packs used in LEVs (light electric vehicles). It tests things like the battery’s physical strength, electrical safety, and environmental limits.

This is a crucial component for any safe eBike.

UL 2849 Certified eBikes

UL 2849 steps back and tests the full electrical system, including how that battery works alongside the charger, motor, and controller. It’s the gold-standard for electric bike safety. 

A UL2849 certified bike is not only better for your ride, it is also more likely to be street-legal anywhere in the U.S. Some cities have made UL2849 certification a required element of a street-legal eBike (along with other elements, like remaining within classes 1, 2, or 3, and other safety standards).

Are Electric Bikes Safe?

Electric bikes are a safe and enjoyable ride when they are made to the appropriate safety standards and used responsibly. 

If you have seen news about eBike battery fires, you should know that these are primarily related to uncertified batteries and off-brand chargers that were not tested to high-level safety standards. 

A battery built to UL 2271 and an electrical system built to UL 2849 are tested for the failures that cause those fires, and they are built with protections like a battery management system that shuts things down before they go sideways. 

To get the safest eBike, make sure you buy a certified bike. This will impact technical safety, and also your ride experience. 

Once you are out the door, the safest eBikes will give you a sturdy frame, reliable breaks, and a motor that doesn’t stop-and-start. Making sure any bike you consider is UL2849 certified is a great place to start. Going beyond that, make sure each component is of the highest quality.

Safe Electric Bike Charging and Riding Tips

A certified bike is a great place to start, but it’s only part of the equation. Riders can take steps to increase the safety of their ride every time you charge up and hop on the bike. 

These are things like: 

  • Charge with the charger that came with your bike. Off-brand chargers are never recommended.
  • Don’t leave it charging unattended overnight. Plug in when you’re around to keep an eye on it.
  • Charge and store at room temperature. Batteries don’t love a freezing garage or a baking trunk.
  • Keep up with regular maintenance. If the battery, charger, or cable looks damaged, stop riding and reach out to us.
  • Buckle your helmet. Always wear a helmet, shoes, and other safety gear while riding.
