What Makes an eBike Class 2?

A class 2 eBike has both a throttle and pedal assist, with the throttle capped at 20 mph. That's the legal definition, and it's what separates a class 2 bike from a Class 1 (pedal assist only, no throttle) or a class 3 (pedal assist up to 28 mph, throttle still capped at 20 mph). 

Every Lectric eBike ships as a class 2 by default, so you get throttle-only riding when you want it and pedal assist when you don't.

Should You Buy a Class 2 or a Class 3 eBike?

The choice between a class 2 and a class 3 ebike comes down to how you’ll ride. For casual commuters looking for a daily ride to work and back, a class 2 eBike has more than enough power and capabilities. For those who plan on tackling offroad adventures or just have a need for speed, class 3 eBikes offer the extra 8 miles per hour.

If you are just joining the eBike community of riders, class 2 is often a good place to start. Moving at top-speed on a class 3 eBike can feel intimidating. While 28mph isn’t much in a car, it is a lot on a bike!

With several Lectric models you don’t have to choose between class 2 and 3. The XP4, XPress2, XPedition2, and XPeak2 ship as class 2 and switch to class 3 through the display settings, giving you 28 mph pedal assist when your local roads and trails allow it, while the throttle stays capped at 20 mph either way.

Does a Class 2 eBike Still Pedal Like a Regular Bike?

Class 2 eBikes have the same pedal system as a regular bike, but you don’t have to pedal to go. Unlike class 1 eBikes that require you to pedal for the motor to assist, class 2 eBikes can be ridden without pedaling with the twist of the throttle. If you still want the physical benefit of pedaling, you can pedal without the throttle, thanks to the standard pedal assist built into Lectric bikes.

What’s the difference between Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 eBikes?

The difference between the classes of eBikes comes down to the extent of assistance the electric motor provides. Class 1 eBikes are pedal assist only, without a throttle and max out at 20 miles per hour. Class 2 eBikes include pedal assist and add a throttle, with top speed still capped at 20mph. Class 3 eBikes include the same pedal assist and throttle of a class 2 eBike, but top out at 28 miles per hour with pedaling on top of the 20mpg throttle cap.

How fast will a Class 2 eBike go?

How do I know if my eBike is Class 1 or Class 2?

A class 1 eBike has pedal assist only, with no throttle. A class 2 eBike has both a throttle and pedal assist, capped at 20 mph either way. Check your bike's throttle: if it can move the bike without you pedaling, it's class 2 or higher, not class 1. Does a Class 2 eBike still pedal like a regular bike?
